Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with French warplanes in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several approach shafts leading to the depot... preliminary assessments are that the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - imposed militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This operation underscores British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of British forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their valour," the Defence Secretary added. "Including them were a great many UK service members stationed over the festive period. This operation, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, shows how British military are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

During December, the US military carried out what it described as a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, following an ambush killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
