Around fifty vehicles have been marked with what appears to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by police.
Cars, building surfaces and postal boxes were vandalized, occasionally with swastikas, they reported in a statement.
Law enforcement state they were notified late on Wednesday night, when a resident observed that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish liquid.
The fluid had been placed in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they added.
Officers then discovered many other smeared vehicles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement say preliminary tests show the substance was likely human blood.
"There is still no clue as to where it came from; investigators are presently not aware of any harm in association with the occurrence," they added.
Local authorities stated they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have appealed to the community for details.
A senior representative said the vandalism rendered him stunned and needed to be addressed promptly.
"This act hits the center of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the right-wing terrorist attack half a decade ago," he posted on online, referring to the killing of nine individuals by a shooter aiming at people of foreign heritage in February 2020.
